Very good Q&A on #Covid boosters with @celinegounder. We got blinded by the ~95% VE the mRNA vaccines showed against all infection in the first couple of months. We're not going to hold that & chasing it with boosters isn't viable. h/t @rkhamsi newyorker.com/news/q-and-a/w…

In presentations I’ve been giving last week, I opened with a reminder on what scientists said in July 2020. Which was that we can probably expect flu level effectiveness - 60-70% against infection - and short term protections. We were surprised by how well the vaccines performed.

But people don’t remember that.

On first read, I’m not sure discussion in article disagrees w this week’s recommendations, w possible exception of @CDCDirector endorsement of vax’ing healthacre workers (and that question was not asked).

Based on that logic, healthy people shouldn’t get the flu vaccine.

the fact of having periodic boosters for a respiratory disease isn't new (think: flu) and as @PeterHotez and even Fauci have said several times this is probably best seen like a 3-dose vaccine plus annual boosters.

persuading the unvaccinated is a different issue from boosters.. it's not like if you don't eat meat, then suddenly vegans order steak.

Did we ever have 95% VE against infection (across all ages)? The 95% from the phase 3 studies were efficacy against symptomatic disease.

Gounder is not a virologist.  She assumes that the booster's effect will fade as quickly as previous jabs.  Many actual virologists have explained that a third jab CAN, and often does, have more long-lasting effects.   Shane Crotty's explanation:
The science of COVID-19 booster vaccines 🧵 Will the boosters works? Yes. They work really well. Great clinical trial results. Antibody levels go back to peak or 4x more, and the booster teaches your immune system to recognize Delta even better. Many vaccines are 3-doses
