Covid is not a morality play in which cases are guaranteed to rise every time human beings take some additional risk.

Masks prevent transmission and don’t cause harms. If we want children in school in person, we NEED to protect them with masks, vaccines, ventilation, distancing & quarantine!

If Oregon outlawed conversion to Christianity by allowing strangers to sue anyone who "aids and abets" a baptism, does anyone seriously believe SCOTUS wouldn't block it?

The immediate direct impact of Texas’ law and SCOTUS’ punt will be abortion rights, of course, but more broadly there will be an unstoppable temptation to draft nutty bounty laws in many states on many topics, right and left, which is going to be very bad for the court system.

When there *is* a scientific consensus, like say on anthropogenic global warming or on the safety and efficacy of COVID vaccines, it's a rare and valuable thing. You undercut the importance of cases like those when you use "follow the science" to score a cheap rhetorical point.

The fact that the main source of Covid panic now surrounds kids and schools suggests we have returned to familiar territory, with similar coordinates to Satanic Panic, Drug War/DARE propaganda, out-of-proportion hysteria about school shootings in more recent years, etc.

We have used rain dances, human sacrifices & all manner of other superstitious rituals throughout history to try to control what is out of our control. To appease the Gods. This is no different. The cloth mask is the new religious talisman to ward off evil spirits.

The neatest part about modeling is that if you build a model that assumes that masks work, it’ll show that masks reduce infections and deaths.

Part of accepting the reality of endemic covid is understanding that our policies need to be sustainable *in perpetuity*. If we’re doing something *after* mass vaccination, then we need to be prepared to do that *forever*. So ask yourself, is the current reality sustainable?
I'm not suggesting there's a nefarious agenda. I'm saying policymakers need to acknowledge the reality that Covid is going to be an endemic disease, meaning we will always have Covid cases, and make policy based on that.

When serious people start saying 'actually babies don't need to see faces' and 'did you know, most of your ancestors never attended school,' I think it's fair to say the train is off the track
