Exactly. Pretending that Facebook is the root of American political pathologies is the new "Blame Russia": just an obvious scapegoat to distract attention from the rotted institutions of power, beginning with US media corporations, that are doing the real damage.
Cable news creates more polarization than Facebook. The prestige media set the agenda more than Facebook. Hollywood, fashion and advertising create more body image issues than Facebook. It’s just that Facebook makes more money.

I have no doubt that Instagram exacerbates body image and other insecurity issues in teenagers. But how does that compare to the *decades* of multi-pronged messaging from the fashion industry, Hollywood, the music industry, the Kardashians, etc. which have bombarded teenagers?

Like Trump, Facebook is primarily a *reflection* of American pathologies, not the prime author. That's not to say it doesn't make it worse -- I have no doubt it does -- but all of these scapegoats are far more a symptom of cultural and political diseases rather than the cause.

You're ignoring the fact that the *reason* they create division is because division is how things go viral on Facbeook. The two problems are inextricably linked. hwfo.substack.com/p/the-soci…

The meritocracy, and its puppet corporate media, aren't troubled by the public being divided. They just want to be the ones controlling the nature and degree of the division. A little division is a helpful diversion but too much is counterproductive.

Facebook is paid by ad revenue, the mega corporations paying the billions of ads are the problem. Anywhere you see corporate ad dollars spent, you see the problem.

I thought virtually nobody is paying attention to US media? How could it be influencing the masses?

There's a lot more to corporate media than MSNBC & CNN, whose audiences are disappearing. There are also these things called NBC News, the NYT, the WPost, and digital media. Have you heard of those? But even with cable, the issue is *who* is watching (influencers), not how many.

They got to offer up something. Placate people. Kinda like Martha Stewart in 2001 and Madoff after 2008. None of the big time criminals had anything happen to them.

Also provides an easy scapegoat the establishment can use to backdoor more censorship under guise of protecting us from wrongthink. Unfortunately it doesn’t matter how loudly we protest, they’ve already manufactured enough consent to get away with whatever new controls they want
