Exactly. Pretending that Facebook is the root of American political pathologies is the new "Blame Russia": just an obvious scapegoat to distract attention from the rotted institutions of power, beginning with US media corporations, that are doing the real damage.
Cable news creates more polarization than Facebook. The prestige media set the agenda more than Facebook. Hollywood, fashion and advertising create more body image issues than Facebook. It’s just that Facebook makes more money.

I have no doubt that Instagram exacerbates body image and other insecurity issues in teenagers. But how does that compare to the *decades* of multi-pronged messaging from the fashion industry, Hollywood, the music industry, the Kardashians, etc. which have bombarded teenagers?

Like Trump, Facebook is primarily a *reflection* of American pathologies, not the prime author. That's not to say it doesn't make it worse -- I have no doubt it does -- but all of these scapegoats are far more a symptom of cultural and political diseases rather than the cause.

It’s exacerbating those pathologies at a rapid and exponential pace, that’s why it’s particularly terrible and something has to be done.

Engineers like to find root cause, Facebook isn’t that. America won’t reflect on the fact it’s pathologies have been baked in for centuries and they won’t do anything about it, too hard.

I agree, only I would add that as technology advances so has the pace. To use a drug analogy - legacy media is oral and social media is injection. I feel we're in the midst of reckoning with how to deal with that.

It bears repeating: "The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders…All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger." — Hermann Goering

Attacking Facebook is the equivalent of smashing the mirror to lose weight. Except this is all a pantomime by people trying to seize the mirror in the hopes of distorting it for themselves.

So few people have that perception of Trump and I have been saying that for years! We always demonize and other those we don’t like or understand. That stops us from ever learning from what our culture can produce.

The farcical element to the FB hysteria is that teenagers don't even use FB anymore! We might as well be holding hearings on how Jazz music is corrupting the youth.
