Gin up controversy, train and motivate protestors, defend Nazi salute, gin up more controversy. No problems solved. The American political spectacle is very broken. 😱

Media enabled Trump by giving him a platform in exchange for attention. They thought they could control him, but Trump is an expert at exploiting weaknesses. Trump used their platforms against them and us, but it was ok because they were making money.

What if we re-imagined our platforms and media based upon the "democratic motive" rather than the "profit motive," what would they look like? How would they work? As things stand the "democratic motive" is eulogistic covering for the "profit motive."

Every reporter I've ever talked with cares deeply about democracy. They care about justice and holding people in power to account. This isn't reporters' fault, it's the system within which they work.

In other words, though reporters are on the frontline and who we associate with a news organization, they're not actually the most powerful members of the media industry. They're embedded within a system over which they have little control.

I just broke the news to my 8-yo, her response, "YAY, thank you life!"
BREAKING: FDA advisers voted 17-0 (1 abstain) in favor of authorization of the Pfizer #covid19 #vaccine for 5 to 11 year olds. This is absolutely the right decision. Many parents will be relieved have a vaccine to protect their children and allow a return to pre-pandemic lives.
