This nightmarish scenario can't be ruled out. Trump would be the first Speaker of the House who was never elected to Congress, but he's been lots of "firsts," including the first president to be impeached twice and the first among equals to the title of worst president ever.
They’ve floated this a bunch and it’s usually taken as a troll but it will be absolutely become a very real thing, I think.

Even delaying Bannon's trial till next July, as the court has done, seems excessive. Delaying it until October as Bannon has requested would be an outrage. The issues are cut and dried, and justice delayed in this case would truly be justice denied.
Delay, delay, delay. It’s the Trump way. Steve Bannon seeks to delay contempt of Congress trial until October - CNNPolitics cnn.com/2021/12/07/politics/…

Just reminding the Attorney General -- unless he has concluded that former presidents are absolutely and forever immune from federal prosecution for their crimes while in office . . .
The statute of limitations for the federal obstruction of justice crime is 5 years. The below crime committed by the former President occurred less than 5 years ago.

That Trump tried to stop Congress from certifying his defeat, by force if necessary, is increasingly clear. Only 2 explanations for Garland’s inaction: 1. He doubts such an effort constitutes a coup attempt; 2. He has decided former presidents are immune. theguardian.com/us-news/2021…

This captures the heart of darkness that Trump embodies:
"Trump has emerged as a unique figure in American history in that he has marshalled a mass movement of people who are willing to employ political violence for his purposes... That is the thing that scares me" - @jheil w/ @NicolleDWallace

Trump running a scheme? As in a scam? No, don’t tell me!! How out of role!
Trump’s new social media venture was flagged by experts as a scheme, and the SEC is already investigating. politicususa.com/2021/12/06/… via @politicususa

Here’s a move that will simultaneously raise the median IQ of Congress and lower the median IQ of Trump’s media company, which can’t have hard much room to fall before hitting rock bottom . . .  washingtonpost.com/politics/…

Sadly, it sure looks that way. Again, where are you, Mr. Attorney General???
Why does Trump seem so confident Garland will let him off the hook for obvious, blatant obstruction of justice to the point where he's openly bragging about it? Because he knows he's gonna skate.

Count on this DOJ to look the other way until the 5-year statute of limitations has run, then say “Oops, too late now.” Merrick Garland, what say you?
Still sounds like obstruction of justice to me: “if I didn't fire Comey, they were looking to take down the President of the United States..I don't think I could have survived if I didn't fire him, because it was like a hornet's nest." [The former guy] msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show…

Just more evidence that Merrick Garland's DOJ is curiously AWOL when it comes to the upper-level planners (including Trump himself) of the attempted coup and the Jan 6 insurrection: justsecurity.org/79446/the-a…

"Defenders of women’s reproductive freedom can ill afford blue-state complacency. The real answer to Kavanagh’s softball Q about whether the Court was being asked to ban all abortions was 'Not yet, just wait.'" And don't be too sure this Court would let Congress codify Roe!

The family that conspires together . . .
Text messages reviewed by ProPublica represent the strongest indication yet that members of the Trump family inner circle were involved in financing and organizing the Jan. 6 “Save America” rally, which immediately preceded the Capitol riot. propub.li/3FWgbqk
